Answer each question based only on what was covered in the video lesson. No outside knowledge is required — all answers can be found in the video.
Show all work for each problem. Problems increase in difficulty — start with bond order calculations and work up to full MO diagram analysis.
These are challenging, exam-level questions that require multi-step reasoning, analysis, and evaluation of molecular orbital theory concepts. Push beyond memorization — be prepared to apply, extend, and critique ideas.
Molecular Orbital Theory Chad provides an introduction to Molecular Orbital Theory (MO Theory) giving the basic understanding needed to understand bonding in Organic Chemistry. Chad explains how constructive overlap of atomic orbitals produces bonding molecular orbitals, and how destructive overlap produces anti-bonding molecular orbitals. Chad specifically covers the molecular orbital diagram (i.e. mo diagram) for hydrogen (H2) and related species as well as for pi molecular orbitals. An mo diagram shows the energy relationship between atomic orbitals and molecular orbitals. Chad demonstrates how sigma overlap (end-to-end overlap) produces both a lower energy sigma bonding molecular orbital and a higher energy sigma antibonding molecular orbital. Chad then proceeds to show how the sideways overlap of p orbitals, pi overlap, produces both a lower energy pi bonding molecular orbital and a higher energy pi antibonding molecular orbital. Finally, Chad demonstrates how to calculate bond order from an mo diagram using the mo diagram for h2 as the example.
