Therapy looks very different depending on who needs help and why. This lesson walks through the major treatment modalities covered in Section 16.3 of OpenStax Psychology 2e — from the very first clinical intake all the way through individual, group, couples, and family therapy. Along the way, you'll see how each format is matched to the specific "environment" where a psychological problem actually lives. In this video: • The intake process: how therapists establish confidentiality, set measurable objectives, and build a treatment plan before therapy even begins • Individual therapy: one-on-one sessions lasting 45–60 minutes, tailored to goals ranging from overcoming a phobia to unwinding childhood trauma • Group therapy (5–10 clients): how it attacks isolation and shame, including psychoeducational groups — illustrated with children coping with a parent's cancer diagnosis • Limitations of group therapy and the peer-modeling advantage: why clients often accept hard feedback from peers more readily than from a therapist • Couples therapy: using cognitive-behavioral therapy to identify destructive communication loops, with the textbook's vivid 'piloting a helicopter in a hurricane' description • Family therapy's systems approach: treating the family as one organized system rather than a collection of individuals — e.g., asking what a teenager's acting-out behavior reveals about the whole family dynamic • Structural vs. strategic family therapy: rebuilding broken parent-child hierarchies versus designing short-term tactical plans for acute problems #OpenStax #Psychology #MentalHealth #Therapy #FamilyTherapy OpenStax Content adapted from "OpenStax Psychology 2e", by OpenStax licensed under CC BY 4.0.
